Catechist Formation Program

Implementation: Fall 2024

What is the goal of this program?

  • To facilitate encounter and deeper intimacy with Jesus Christ
  • To lead you into a holistic understanding of the Catholic faith.
  • To form you in the skills needed to disciple others.

What is the purpose of catechist formation?

This program seeks to equip those working with the youth and adult of our diocese, to recognize God’s invitation of love in their lives, and to allow that love to overflow into their mission field. Whether you serve in the classroom, a parish religious education program, adult formation, or youth ministry, it is our goal to empower you to form disciples.

Who should participate in catechist formation?

If you serve as a Catholic school teacher, catechetical leader (C/DRE, YM), volunteer catechist, substitute catechist, aide with teaching responsibility, youth minister, peer team member, or group leader in the Diocese of Rockford, this program is for you!

What are the sessions?

Each formation session is steeped in Sacred Scripture and grounded in the rich tradition of our Catholic Faith. Using the pillars of the Catechism of the Catholic Church, and best practices in ministry, the sessions focus on our own relationship with Jesus Christ, as well as our call and desire to form disciples for mission. We will work from the inside out: first, understand our own identities in Christ, and then allowing God’s love to overflow into the work we do with the youth and adults.

Who are the presenters?

Session presenters include Diocesan leaders from the Religious Education and Youth Ministry Offices, clergy, parish Directors of Religious Education, and other pastoral ministers with expertise in various areas.

What do I need?

You will need a Catholic translation of the Bible and the ability to take notes. If you wish, you can also bring a copy of the Catechism of the Catholic Church. Most presenters will provide handouts and resources.

How do I track my catechist formation?

You will use the Personal Formation Plan Form to keep track of the sessions you participate in. To receive credit for each session, you must complete and submit a Personal Reflection form. Once the reflection form is submitted, your parish’s catechetical leader (or school principal) will keep track of your progress. Each year, you will receive a copy of your progress.
